The Monastery of Göttweig

The „Austrian Montecassino" was founded in 1083 by St. Altmann, Bishop of Passau, as an Augustine monastery and settled in 1094 by Benedictine monks from St. Blasien in the Black Forest.

The Monastery of Göttweig lies 449 meters above sea level in the Dunkelstein Forest on the eastern edge of the world famous Danube valley, the Wachau, south of the city of Krems on the Danube.

For over 900 years Benedictine monks have prayed and worked on the Göttweig hill. The goal of their lives is the glorification of God in prayer and work according to the rules of St. Benedict, the Father of their order and the patron saint of Europe.

A few remnants remain from the buildings of the Middle Ages, such as the Erentrudis Chapel from 1072, the gate house, and the crypt and choir of the church. The baroque monastery complex was built based on plans from the architect Lucas von Hildebrandt, after a fire in 1718 destroyed the old monastery.

The showrooms in the Museum in the Emperor's Tract, the monumental Emperor's Staircase crowned by the ceiling fresco painted by Paul Troger (1698-1762) in 1739, the Emperor Rooms and the Altmann Hall as well as the Monastery Church, Crypta and Cloister are special sights and should not be missed.

The Göttweig Monastery is also represented in the Internet.
